스타워즈8 라스트 제다이 감상

 

 

홀로 스타워즈를 보고온 후 하루종일 여운에 잠겨 있었습니다.
리뷰어들의 혹평들을 보면서 취향의 차이는 정말 크다는 것도 새삼 느끼고 있구요.
대세가 어떻든 간에 나름 좋았던 장면들을 글로 되새기며 스타워즈를 좀 더 즐겨보고자 합니다.

1. 페이의 각오

많은 분들이 무중력 우주에서 하강폭탄은 말도 안된다고 하시는데 사실 저는 문과라 그런지 전혀 어색함을 못느꼈습니다. ㅎㅎ
초반부터 몰아치는 긴장감+영상미에 넋을 놓고 있었지요. 버튼 한번 누르는 것도 스릴넘치게 만드는 연출력에 마음속으로 찬사를 보냈습니다. 로그원 스카리프전투 느낌도 좀 났구요.

2. 포와 BB의 콤비플레이 + 엑스윙 전멸

포와 BB-8의 콤비플레이는 루크와 R2에 대한 훌륭한 오마쥬였습니다.
엑스윙 격납고가 초토화되는 장면은 생각지도 못한 충격이었지만 포가 평범한 편대장에서 지도자로 거듭나는 계기가 되는 장면이라고 생각하고 보니 뒤늦게 납득이 되었습니다.

3. 포와 홀더제독의 갈등 그리고 반전

이번 영화는 처음부터 끝까지 새로운 주역들의 성장을 위한 구세대의 숭고한 희생으로 채워져있습니다. 홀더제독의 등장과 퇴장은 오로지 포의 성장을 위한 것으로 보였습니다. 대사가 많지 않았음에도 여배우의 연기가 너무나 좋았습니다. 우아함이 뚝뚝 흘러내리더군요.

4. 루크와 요다의 재회

사실 이번 영화에서 가장 쇼킹했던 부분입니다. 너무너무너무 요다의 움직임이 어색했지만, 익숙한 그 어색함이 제 마음속 오래된 어딘가를 쿡 찌르더군요. 불타는 제다이의 고서들과 대비되는 요다의 메세지, '실패야말로 가르칠만한 가치가 있는 것이다...'
최고로 감격스러운 장면이었습니다.

5. 핀과 로즈의 카지노도시 질주

많은 분들이 이 카지노도시에서의 모험을 불필요한 장면이라고 하시지만 저는 다르게 생각했습니다. 사실 이번 영화에서는 반란군이 제국군에 왜 대항하는지, 제국군과 반란군의 철학은 어떻게 다른것인지를 핀과 로즈의 모험을 통해서 보여주고 있습니다. 돈과 향락에 빠진 도시 밑에서는 어린아이들과 동물들이 학대를 당하고 있습니다. 그들은 처음엔 핀을 경계하지만 반란군 표식을 보자 믿고 협조합니다. 즉 그들에게는 반란군이 현실을 바꿀 수 있는 유일한 희망인 것이죠. 저는 오히려 이 장면들이 더 길고 선명하게 메세지를 전달했어야 했다고 생각합니다. 이 장면 전까지 도망칠 궁리만 하고 카지노의 화려함에 눈돌아가던 핀이 이후에는 한단계 성숙하여 망설임없이 반란군의 길을 걸어갑니다. 즉 반란군이 승산이 없음에도 왜 싸워야하고 승리해야만 하는지 핀과 관객에게 그 이유를 설명해주고 있는 것이죠. 핀으로써는 반란군을 돕는것이 그저 레이의 생사를 확인하기 위한 방편일 뿐이었지만 이 장면 이후로는 자신의 의지로 목숨을 던지면서까지 반란군을 위해 싸우려 합니다. 핀의 성장을 위해 준비된 중요한 스토리라고 생각합니다.

6. 레이, 렌과 스노크 가드와의 대결

아 드디어 누군가의 손모가지가 날아가겠구나 예감했던 장면입니다. 누구 손이 날아갈까 엄청 긴장하면서 봤는데 다행히 손모가지는 안날라가고 라이트세이버가 대신 동강나더군요. 전투 자체도 스타일리시하고 참 멋졌지만 9편에서는 라이트세이버 대신 어떤 무기를 쓰게될지 기대가 되기도 합니다. 혹시나 레이가 빠졌던 지하동굴 어딘가에 아나킨의 라이트세이버가 숨겨져있지 않을지.. 또는 항상 매고다니는 창끝에 개조한 라이트세이버를 달지는 않을까요? 무척 궁금합니다. 더불어 스노크 가드들은 렌과 함께 탈주한 제다이 수련생들이라고 생각합니다.

7. 루크와 레아공주의 재회

두번째로 눈물 흘릴뻔한 장면입니다.
더이상 자세한 설명은 생략하겠습니다.

8. 루크의 최후

처음엔 아쉬운 마음이 컷는데 시간이 지날수록 이보다 더 제다이다운 최후는 없겠다란 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 오비완도 요다도 아나킨도 위대한 제다이였지만 최후엔 용서 그리고 빛으로의 인도로써 자신의 사명을 마쳤습니다. 제국군에 엄청난 포스의 힘으로 맞서다 장렬한 최후를 맞는것이 옳다고 생각하는 분들도 있겠지만.. 제가 보고 이해했던 제다이의 사명은 그런것이 아니었습니다.
이런 이해속에서도 루크의 모습을 앞으로 다시 볼 수 없다는 점은 정말 마음이 아프긴 합니다.

이외에도 자잘하게 생각할거리, 재미요소들이 많았고 놓친 부분도 많았다고 생각합니다. 특히 마지막에 꼬마가 포스로 빗자루 드는걸 못봤습니다. T.T 겸사겸사 주말에 한번더 볼까 고민 중입니다.
그리고 스타워즈에서 서사, 개연성을 열심히 찾는 분들이 보이는데.. 그만 포기하셨으면 좋겠습니다. 광선검, 외계인, 레이저포, 공주, 행성파괴무기, 포스, 로봇, 괴생물체, 탄소냉동, 복제인간군단 등등 온갖 말도 안되지만 멋지고 아름다운 것들을 유치한 스토리와 함께 버무려 감상하는 것이 스타워즈의 본질이었고 파~ 파~ 어웨이로 시작하는 촌스런 폰트에서부터 대놓고 '나 유치할거야 너 각오해~'라고 말하고 있거든요. 이런 관점에서 볼때 1,2,3,7,로그원보다 부담감을 떨쳐내고 4,5,6편의 B급 감성에 가장 근접한 것이 이번 8편이라고 봅니다.

After seeing Star Wars alone, I've been thinking about it all day.
Seeing the harsh reviews from reviewers reminded me that there are so many differences in taste.
Regardless of the popular opinion, I'd like to share some of my favorite scenes to help you enjoy Star Wars more.

1. Faye's Determination


Many people say that the descent bomb in zero gravity space is ridiculous, but in fact, I didn't feel awkward at all because I'm a literature student. lol
I was mesmerized by the tension + visuals from the beginning, and I praised the director for making it so thrilling to press a button. It felt a bit like the Rogue One scarf battle.

2. Poe and BB's Combination Play + X-Wing Annihilation

The combo play between Poe and BB-8 was a great homage to Luke and R2.
The destruction of the X-Wing hangar was an unexpected shock, but it made sense in hindsight when I thought of it as Poe's transformation from an ordinary squadron leader to a leader.

3. The conflict between Poe and Admiral Holder and its twist

From start to finish, this movie is filled with the noble sacrifices of the older generation for the growth of the newer ones. Admiral Holder's entrance and exit seemed to be solely for Poe's growth. I loved the actress' performance, even though she didn't have a lot of lines - the grace just dripped off her.

4. Luke and Yoda's reunion

This was actually the most shocking part of the film for me. Yoda's movements were so, so, so awkward, but that familiar awkwardness struck an old chord in me. Yoda's message, contrasted with the burning Jedi texts, "Failure is something worth teaching...
It was the most emotional scene ever.

5. Finn and Rose's Casino City Ride

Many people say that the adventure in the casino city is unnecessary, but I disagree. In fact, the movie shows why the rebels are against the Empire and how the philosophy of the Empire and the rebels are different through the adventure of Finn and Rose. They are initially wary of Finn, but when they see the Rebel sign, they trust and cooperate, meaning that for them, the Rebels are the only hope to change their reality. I think these scenes should have been longer and more explicit in their message. Finn, who before this scene was only thinking about running away and being distracted by the glamor of the casino, has matured and walks the path of the rebels without hesitation, which means that the film is explaining to Finn and the audience why the rebels must fight and win, even if the odds are against them. Before, helping the rebels was just a way to make sure Rey is alive, but after this scene, he is willing to fight for the rebels, even to the point of throwing his life away. I think it's an important story that sets up Finn's growth.

6. Rey, Ren and the Snoke Guard Showdown

This is the scene where I knew someone's hand was going to get blown off. I was so nervous that someone's hand was going to get blown off, but thankfully it didn't, and the lightsaber was shattered instead. The battle itself was stylish and very cool, but I'm also excited to see what weapons they'll use instead of lightsabers in Episode 9. Maybe Anakin's lightsaber is hidden somewhere in the underground cave that Rey fell into... or maybe he'll have a modified lightsaber on the tip of the spear he always carries? We're very curious. I also think the Snoke Guards are the Jedi trainees who escaped with Ren.

7. Luke and Princess Leia Reunite

This is the second scene that almost brought me to tears.
I won't say much more about it.

8. Luke's final scene

At first, I was sad to see Luke go, but as time went on, I realized that it couldn't have been a more Jedi ending. Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin were all great Jedi, but in the end, they ended their missions with forgiveness and guidance to the light. I know some people think it's only right that they meet an epic end after standing up to the Empire with so much Force power. That's not how I saw and understood the Jedi mission.
Even with this understanding, it still breaks my heart that we won't see Luke again.

There were a lot of other little things to think about, a lot of fun things to do, and a lot of things I missed. I especially missed seeing the kid lift the broom with the Force at the end. T.T. I'm thinking about watching it again this weekend.
And for those of you who are looking for narrative and coherence in Star Wars, I wish you'd just give up. Lightsabers, aliens, laser cannons, princesses, planet destroyers, the Force, robots, monsters, carbon frozen, clone troops, and all sorts of ridiculous but wonderful and beautiful things mixed with a childish story is the essence of Star Wars, and it's saying "I'm going to be childish and you should brace yourself" right from the cheesy font that starts with pah-pah-pah-away. From this perspective, I think this 8th installment is the closest to the B-movie sensibility of 4,5,6 than 1,2,3,7,and Rogue One.
